In the past few posts, I have demonstrated multiple ways to curate your LinkedIn community, including Unlinking, Muting, Reporting and Blocking people. This post will cover why and how to unfollow someone on LinkedIn.
LinkedIn can be a helpful and powerful tool but many people avoid the platform because their news stream has become filled with spam, irrelevant or worse yet, offensive content or is just one big sales pitch. Don’t let the noisy few, turn you off! Your LinkedIn community is YOURS to create and curate. It’s like a party and YOU get to decide who to invite and who gets to stay.
Why to UNFOLLOW someone on LinkedIn
If you are seeing someone post things that are:
- too frequent
- off-topic
- overly self-promotional
- too salesy
but the person is:
- someone you should stay connected to for networking or work-related reasons
- someone you know and want to be able to message with via LinkedIn
- a friend or family member who you want to stay in touch with
then unfollowing them is probably a good solution.
In the video example I share below, I am unfollowing a company that posts links that are behind a paywall. Since I do not subscribe, I am never able to read the full posts.
In the example below that, I show you how to unfollow a specific person’s profile, but the process is the same.
What happens when you UNFOLLOW someone on LinkedIn?
Unfollowing someone on LinkedIn is a quick, easy and the least damaging way to stop seeing someone’s content in your LinkedIn stream.
- If you are connected (previously linked, via an invitation) you remain connected.
- You simply stop seeing that person’s posts and activity in your feed.
- They are NOT notified that you’ve unfollowed them.
- You can still message them and view their profile.
How to UNFOLLOW someone on LinkedIn
You can unfollow an account or a person from any of their posts.
Go to the 3 dots, found to the upper right of the post, click and you will see a drop down menu.
Choose ‘UNFOLLOW’ and you are done.
Here is a quick video where I show you how to unfollow a company account:
The process is similar when you want to unfollow a person.
You can go to that person’s LinkedIn profile and click on the MORE button below their image.
You will see a drop down menu with the option to ‘UNFOLLOW’ (among others).
