Instagram offers many post types. Here, I explain the various Instagram formats, along with examples of each and an explanation of how YOU might use each of these to reach YOUR goals.

Instagram Post Types: Feed Posts
- What They Are: Static photos or videos posted to your main profile grid.
- Who They Help You Reach: Engage with your existing followers.
- Best For: Evergreen content, product shots, announcements, educational tips.
- Lifespan: Permanent (unless deleted), continue to get engagement over time.
Example: A beautiful photo of a new product, along with a detailed description and a customer’s rave review. Keep it ‘on brand’. This can be done by using the same or a similar background, or always use the same filter or location – use a pine forest or white tile backdrop, something visually distinctive and associated with your brand’s vibe.
Feed posts are your brand’s ‘portfolio’ or ‘gallery’ — they build and define your aesthetic, tell your story, and stay visible long after posting. Perfect for evergreen content you want people to find weeks or months later.
These posts are the backbone of your Instagram presence. Curate your grid, deleting things that don’t convey the correct message (visually and/or text wise) and post consistently to stay on people’s radar.

Instagram Post Types: Carousels
- What They Are: A swipeable series of up to 10 photos or videos in a single post.
- Who They Help You Reach: Engage with your existing followers and reach new audiences.
- Best For: Step-by-step tutorials, before/after reveals, storytelling, product collections.
- Lifespan: Permanent, with higher engagement potential as users swipe.
Example: A “5 Ways to Style a White Shirt” post, with each swipe showing a different outfit.
Carousels encourage swiping, which increases time spent on your post — boosting its chances in the algorithm. Ideal for tutorials, storytelling, in depth, multi page walk throughs, tips, before-and-after transformations, or showcasing multiple products at once.

Instagram Post Types: Stories
- What They Are: Vertical photo or video posts that disappear after 24 hours (unless saved to Highlights).
- Who They Help You Reach: Engage with your existing followers.
- Best For: Behind-the-scenes content, time-sensitive promotions, polls, Q&A, quick tips.
- Lifespan: 24 hours (or saved as Highlights for longer visibility).
Example: Behind-the-scenes clips of your team setting up for a pop-up shop, with an interactive poll asking “Which display do you like best?”
Keep your Stories personal and immediate. This format is a good fit for real-time updates, quick engagement, and driving traffic via link stickers. Great for building connection, trust and urgency.

Instagram Post Types: Reels
- What They Are: Short-form vertical videos (up to 90 seconds) designed for discovery.
- Who They Help You Reach: Engage with existing followers and reach new audiences.
- Best For: Trending content, entertainment, tutorials, audience growth.
- Lifespan: Permanent on your profile’s Reels tab, with extended reach potential via the Explore page.
Example: A quick, 15-second “3 Ways to Style a Scarf” video with trending music and text overlays.
Reels are built for discovery — they can be shown to people who don’t follow you yet. Great for increasing reach, riding trends, and showcasing you and your brand’s personality in short, digestible bursts.

Instagram Post Types: Live
- What They Are: Real-time video streaming to your followers.
- Who They Help You Reach: Nurture your existing community.
- Best For: Live Q&A, product launches, events, interviews.
- Lifespan: Ends when you stop streaming, but can be saved and posted as a replay.
Example: A 20-minute live session answering “Top 5 Skincare Questions” from your followers.
Lives create real-time connection, letting viewers ask questions and get answers instantly. Perfect for launches, Q&As, interviews, or events where you want to engage directly with your audience. A great fit for those who are looking to establish their expertise.

Instagram Post Types: Highlights
- What They Are: Curated collections of your past Stories, saved permanently to your profile and displayed in clickable circles below your bio.
- Best For: Showcasing important or evergreen content like FAQs, services, testimonials, product lines, or event recaps.
- Lifespan: Permanent until you remove them, making them an ideal way to keep high-value Stories visible.
Example: A “Client Testimonials” highlight that saves positive customer feedback videos from your Stories. Highlights give Stories a permanent home on your profile. They’re perfect for grouping related content — like FAQs, services, events, or behind-the-scenes — so new visitors can quickly learn about your brand.
Bonus points if you ‘brand’ your Highlight categories for quick, easy retrieval by your visitors!
